English is the international language of science. In Iran, English is taught and learned as a foreign language. There is no doubt that the English-language-based scientific and technical world is flooding our universities. Every day, a new body of this kind of material is added to the current body of knowledge. This material, for any reason, is mostly presented to the university students in English language. The non-English-language university students generally have problems with translating these texts into Farsi, their native language. This study presumes that the main cause of these students’ failure in translating their needed material into Farsi is simply they are not taught how to translate. The assumption of this study is if the non-English-language university students are taught to translate, at least and mostly the technical texts related to their own field of study, they will be able to meet their own need for translation. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the possibility of appropriating translation exercises in the general English courses for the University students majoring in fields other than English Language. Therefore, this research aims at exploring the answers to these questions: Does translation promote language learning and, ultimately, proficiency? What kind of translation do learners need? How can we integrate translation in existing courses? It also presents insights into the direction, content and the organization of translation tasks.
